Karolina Argyridou, Principal at Verita Legal (K. Argyridou & Associates LLC), was recently invited by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry to give a seminar on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The seminar, which took place on 14th May 2018 in Nicosia was very well received by the 220 delegates in attendance. Among these business people and other professionals were lawyers, accountants, fund managers, investment advisers and in-house lawyers as well as administrators of hospital, schools and hotels. The seminar highlighted (i) the key principles of GDPR (ii) HR issues arising out of the Regulation and (iii) tips for practical implementation.
GDPR is a voluminous and through piece of legislation that comes into force on 25th May 2018 and which re-writes the manner in which personal information is collected, shared and processed. GDPR sets out the new personal data framework by means of an EU Regulation which, unlike EU Directives that are implemented by Member State national laws, are directly effective in EU Member States. Therefore, business falling with the scope of GDPR (see attached Memo) should ensure that they have undertaken the necessary steps to be compliant with this important piece of legislation as the sanctions for non-compliance are significantly more draconian than existed under the data protection law that GDPR now replaces.
Karolina is widely acknowledged as a leading lawyer on the subject of GDPR in Cyprus and has given seminars on the subject to many hundreds of professionals across Cyprus. Should you require assistance in this area, please do not hesitate to contact us.
